Turning The Corner
Turning the Corner (TTC) Residential Treatment Programs provide services for adolescent and young male adults ages 12 – 21 with behavioral problems, assigned to TTC by the Rhode Island Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF).
Our programs are designed to meet both adolescent and family needs, ranging from the basics of shelter and safety to the complex longer-term needs of the youth we serve. Turning The Corner operates a 30-day shelter and assessment program, a program for adolescents with developmental disabilities, two programs for adolescent males with abuse reactive issues, and a mental health wellness and recovery program. On any given day we provide as many as 40 youth and their families with a variety of services.
Our treatment population includes a diverse cross-section of youth (including LBGTQ youth) with histories of abuse, neglect and trauma – some with developmental disabilities, complex psychiatric diagnoses, sexual offense charges, substance abuse issues, gang affiliation, and issues of domestic violence. All have parents/caregivers who are unable to provide safety and stability for the youth at the present time.
The following are some of the services TTC matches to and plans for referred children, youth and families:
psychosocial assessments, including DSM-V diagnosis;
individual, group and family therapy;
family reunification assessment and plan; and
access to psychiatric services, including managing and monitoring the administration of medication, case management, and ARC methodology in residential and clinical services.
TTC is licensed by the Rhode Island Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF). It’s also a member agency of the Rhode Island Council of Resource Providers (RICORP), for children, youth and families.
Our Approach
Each residential treatment client is assigned a Case Manager who provides assistance in securing school placement, managing files, contacting CASA and educational advocates, HIPPA compliance, Medicaid Review and a multitude of other tasks. Our nurse provides health and safety training for all direct care team members and treatment of youth for minor health issues. We collaborate with other community based agencies to help provide holistic care. When a youth comes into our care, we initiate a service plan that assesses and lays out goals based on the individualized needs of the youth and his family.
To do this, we take a holistic approach to treatment for each client. We work closely with a wide variety of professionals, medical specialists and the resident’s family or guardian to develop a comprehensive treatment plan within the first 30 days. We use Ohio Scales and Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths (CANS) as measurement tools, with input from our clinician, program director, case manager and residential staff, as well as DCYF, educational providers, psychiatric providers, probation and the court system to ensure we provide the best care possible.
Each client is provided with one hour of individual therapy by our clinician per week, family therapy (when appropriate) and one hour of group therapy by our clinician each week. Clinical times can increase based on a client’s need.
We recognize that the youth and families we serve have suffered trauma and sometimes that results in the youth being temporarily separated from his family. To further help guide our treatment, Turning The Corner has also incorporated the Attachment, Self-Regulation and Competency (ARC) treatment model into all of its programming, which allows us to create an effective framework for intervention for youth and families.
